Monsieur le Directeur général,
Monsieur le conseiller d’Etat,
Monsieur le président du Grand Conseil,
Messieurs les ministres,
Excellences,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the new home of the World Health Organisation. In 1966, the WHO moved from the Palais des Nations into its own building.

Since then, the WHO and the importance of Geneva as a global health hub have grown steadily, and so have the complexity of the global health challenges.

Today the WHO goal – “Health for all” – is more important than ever. This goal can only be achieved through a strong commitment for multilateralism and a strong WHO. I believe there could be no better symbol to renew this commitment than being here today, in the new extension building of the WHO.

A building between tradition and innovation. Tradition, because the extension of the Jean Tschumi building was also designed by Swiss architects, by Berrel & Kräutler from Zurich – with many similar elements. Innovation, because it embodies the future orientation of international Geneva with its modular spaces.

Ladies and gentlemen

For its new headquarters, Switzerland offers to the WHO the artwork “Früchte tragen” (“Bearing fruits”) by Simone Holliger. It is an honor and a pleasure for me to inaugurate this sculpture and to have Miss Holliger present with us today.

The artist contrasts the modernist architecture with a sculpture that seems to have grown organically, referring to the core of the WHO’s work: the human body.

With this gift, Switzerland wishes to show its strong support to the WHO. May this sculpture be a reminder, dear Director-General, that building bridges between expertise and communities is a way to strengthen global health, a way for our efforts to “bear fruits”.

Now I have the pleasure to officially hand over this artwork to the WHO.
