Visit by Bulgarian Vice-President Iliana Iotova
Alain Berset receives Iliana Iotova in Berne. She is Vice-President of Bulgaria, which then holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union. At the centre of the talks: the Western Balkans, a priority of the Bulgarian presidency. Some 500,000 people from the former Yugoslavia and Albania hold Swiss citizenship. Alain Berset says he is ready for joint infrastructure and transport projects in the region: “Bulgaria is a good mediator between the Western Balkans and Switzerland.”
They also discuss the future of the EU, the multiannual financial framework, Brexit and migration. The President confirms that Switzerland intends to continue its cooperation programme with Bulgaria beyond 2019 (security, environment, dual vocational training). An agreement against illicit trafficking in cultural property is in preparation.
