Federal Council meeting extra muros in St. Gallen

28 March 2018

The Federal Council meets in corpore in St. Gallen: its thirteenth “extra muros” meeting since 2010. Before the meeting, the President of the Swiss Confederation holds a press conference on the Klosterplatz. He recalls that the government had not come to St. Gallen as a body since Kurt Furgler’s Federal Council outing in 1985, and reads two dates, 1918 and 1968: one warns against the failure of international cooperation, the other speaks of momentum.

After the meeting, the public is invited to an aperitif, with Karin Keller-Sutter, President of the Council of States. Alain Berset describes an imaginary meeting on a “red square” in every cantonal capital, then quotes a survey: the hero of the Swiss is Nelson Mandela. “Die Skepsis gegenüber fremden Richtern ist grösser als gegenüber fremden Helden.” The Federal Council then has lunch with the St. Gallen government. That day, among other things, it opened the consultation on a second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states.
