Health2020 national conference: “Less is more”
Alain Berset and Philippe Perrenoud, member of a cantonal government and President of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Health Directors, bring together nearly 300 players from the health system in Berne. The third Health2020 national conference is devoted to unnecessary or excessive services: where they occur, why, and how to reduce them.
In his opening address, he quotes Einstein, “a former technical expert third class at the Patent Office”: “Mache die Dinge so einfach wie möglich – aber nicht einfacher.” He welcomes the medical profession’s commitment to the “Choosing Wisely” initiatives. Superfluous treatments expose patients to risks and drive up the bill.
In closing, he notes that the participants talked “with one another rather than about one another”. The ways forward: raising awareness, revising tariffs, developing outpatient surgery and the assessment of services.
