Swiss Theatre Awards 2018

At the Pfauen of the Schauspielhaus Zürich, during the Swiss Theatre Encounter, Alain Berset presents the Swiss Theatre Awards. The Swiss Grand Award for Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring goes to Theater Sgaramusch in Schaffhausen. The five awards go to the wildwuchs festival (Basel), Gabi Bernetta, Anne Bisang, Oscar Gómez Mata and Ruedi Häusermann.

The speech starts from the history of the Pfauen, a former popular theatre, then slides into politics with Oscar Wilde: “Das Stück war ein grosser Erfolg. Nur das Publikum ist durchgefallen.” He applies it to the pension reform rejected in September 2017. His thesis: “Das Theater braucht die Gesellschaft – oder es stirbt ab.” The question is access to culture, and withdrawal within society itself.
