Tages-Anzeiger Meeting: “Immer die Balance suchen”

At the Schiffbau, a former shipbuilding hall turned theatre, Alain Berset takes up the image of the venue: a ship only reaches port safely if it is balanced. “Stellen Sie sich vor, das Schiff wäre zum Beispiel rechtslastig.” He introduces himself as a former 800-metre runner, a discipline in which you start flat out and then accelerate: “Aber das ist kein Rezept für die Politik.”

The substance is his method for the legislature: a social and health policy of balance, between town and country, young and old, women and men; a comprehensive reform of old-age provision rather than piecemeal changes that fail one after another. And a formula: “Darum ist langsam schneller. Wer es eilig hat, der nehme alle mit, damit ihm niemand den Weg blockiert.”
